The Secrets to Bigger Tips

Why Sell Wine? Part 1

This is the first in a series of: Why Sell Wine?

As a professional waiter, the number one reason to sell wine is Increased Check Averages and Higher Gratuities! For example, if you were to sell just four bottles of wine a shift and I am going to use a low end price of $25 a bottle and you work five shifts per week and lets say only 50 weeks of the year and going again with the low end of the spectrum you make a 15% tip, you would give yourself a raise of $3,750 for the year. Not a bad yearly raise at all.

Here is the breakdown of giving yourself this raise. 4 bottles x $25 x 15% x 5 shifts x 50 weeks equals $3,750.

Now you and I know that you are such a great waiter that you average 20% and you sell $30 bottles of wine.

Lets see what your raise would be now.

4 bottles x $30 x 20% x 5 shifts x 50 weeks equals $6,000 a year additional income. Imagine what you could do with all that extra cash!

Of course we know that you are a much better waiter than that and only sell wine over $40 and $50 a bottle wine.

For fun, you do the math now. If what you come up with doesn't motivate you to sell more wine, you are in the wrong business my friend.

Sell more wine and give yourself a raise!
